Children Helping Children:
The Amani Invitational Children’s Choir Festival

Picture
The purpose of AICCF is to raise awareness of orphans in Kenya abandoned due to HIV/AIDS and poverty, as supported and served by the Amani Children's Foundation based here in Winston-Salem. Children will 'sing together in harmony and celebrate our unity.'

This bi-annual festival is hosted by WSGC which is partnered with the Music and Arts Ministry which plays a supporting role. Children's singers from Winston-Salem and surrounding areas will be included. Tom Shelton, a nationally recognized composer, composed a themed anthem that will be performed at each subsequent festival. This is now published by GIA Music Publications.

Our guest choir is the Cougar Chorus from Cash Elementary School in Kernersville. The public is invited to the culminating performance on Saturday, February 26, at 1:30 pm. It will be held in the sanctuary of Centenary United Methodist Church at 646 W.5th Street in Winston-Salem. A Love Offering will be collected to go to the Amani Children’s Foundation. For more information about the Amani Foundation: www.amanichildren.org.

The Cash Elementary Cougar Chorus is a group of 72 fourth and fifth students who love to sing.  Cougar Chorus is a special learning environment designed to provide a rich and rewarding musical experience for each child. The children study and perform a variety of music from simple unison folk songs to contemporary musical literature. Our mission is to encourage our many gifts and talents as people from diverse backgrounds to raise our voices together in harmony, and to give the gift of music back to the community by singing, learning and performing beautiful music together.

Past performances include performing at the Kernersville Christmas Stocking event, singing with the Heart of the Triad Choral Society, and performing our national anthem for the Winston Salem Dash baseball team and Wake Forest women’s basketball team. Upcoming performances include our spring concert program at Cash Elementary School on Thursday, March 12th at 6PM, and the 3rd Annual Kernersville Junior Choral Festival at Sedge Garden United Methodist Church on Friday April 3rd at 7PM. Cougar Chorus is honored to be a part of this year’s Amani Children’s Festival.

Adam Mitchell is a native of Wilmington, N.C. and a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned a Bachelor of Music with a concentration in Voice and Music Education. He is the general music teacher at Cash Elementary where he teaches kindergarten through fifth grade music, and is the founding director of the Cash Elementary Cougar Chorus. Under his direction, Cougar Chorus has been invited to perform in various choral festivals and joint concert events and has performed our national anthem for the Winston-Salem Dash baseball team and for Wake Forest University sporting events.

Mr. Mitchell has a passion for music education in all areas: church, school, and community.  He has been teaching elementary music in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County since fall of 2014. During that time, he was selected Teacher of the Year for Cash Elementary for the 2018-19 school year. Mr. Mitchell is an active member of the Heart of the Triad Choral Society, and the Kernersville Moravian Church Chapel Choir. In 2018, he co-founded the annual Kernersville Junior Choral Festival in collaboration with the music teachers of Piney Grove Elementary and Sedge Garden Elementary in Kernersville and serves as the conductor of the mass choir for that event.

In addition to teaching at Cash and directing the Cougar Chorus, Mr. Mitchell also teaches private lessons in voice, guitar, and ukulele. Mr. Mitchell makes his home in Kernersville with his wife Elizabeth, daughter Joanna, and cat Sullivan.
